Dinacharya — Daily Rhythm

An ideal daily flow you can gently shape around your life.

Personalize for

  1. Before sunrise

Wake gently, ideally before sunriseब्रह्म मुहूर्त · Brahma Muhūrta

Traditionally the hour before dawn is calm and clear — a peaceful time to begin. Rising at a consistent time matters more than the exact hour.

    How to

    • Aim for a regular wake time, even on weekends.
    • Pause for a few slow breaths before reaching for your phone.
    • Notice one thing you're grateful for.

Vāta: Keep it gentle and warm; a regular time steadies Vata most of all.

Pitta: A calm, unhurried start keeps the day from overheating.

Kapha: Try not to linger — rising a little earlier lifts Kapha heaviness.

  2. On waking

    Scrape your tongueजिह्वा निर्लेखन · Jihvā Nirlekhana

A simple morning practice: gently clear the overnight coating from your tongue. Many people find it freshens the mouth and wakes the senses.

    How to

    • Use a copper or stainless-steel scraper (a spoon works too).
    • Draw it gently from back to front 5–7 times.
    • Rinse and continue with brushing as usual.

Be gentle — never scrape hard enough to hurt or break the skin. Keep your scraper clean.

  3. Morning

    Oil pulling (optional)गण्डूष / कवल · Gaṇḍūṣa / Kavala

Swishing a spoon of oil around the mouth is a traditional oral-care ritual some enjoy as part of the morning.

    How to

    • Swish about a teaspoon of sesame or coconut oil for 5–10 minutes.
    • Don't gargle or swallow it.
    • Spit into a bin (not the sink, to avoid clogging), then rinse and brush.

Spit out — never swallow the oil. Skip if you have mouth sores. It complements, and does not replace, normal dental care.

  4. Morning

    A glass of warm water

A cup of warm water on waking is a gentle way to greet the day and encourage a regular morning rhythm.

    How to

    • Sip warm (not scalding) water.
    • Some add a little lemon, to taste — purely culinary.

Kapha: Warm water with a touch of ginger feels especially enlivening.

  5. Before bathing

    Self oil-massage (Abhyanga)अभ्यंग · Abhyaṅga

A warm self-massage with oil before a shower is one of Ayurveda's most loved rituals — grounding, warming, and a moment of self-care.

    How to

    • Warm a little oil (sesame is classic; coconut for cooling).
    • Massage into the body, long strokes on limbs, circles on joints.
    • Let it settle a few minutes, then bathe in comfortably warm water.

Vāta: Daily warm sesame-oil massage is deeply soothing for Vata.

Pitta: Favour cooling coconut oil and a gentle touch.

Kapha: Lighter and less frequent; a brisk dry-brush can suit better.

Patch-test new oils for sensitivity. Take care — oil makes surfaces slippery. Avoid over varicose veins, broken skin, or if advised against by your doctor.

  6. Morning

    Move & breatheव्यायाम · Vyāyāma

Gentle morning movement and breathwork wake the body and settle the mind. This is where the yoga and pranayama practices fit your day.

    How to

    • A short yoga flow or stretch.
    • A few minutes of breathwork.
    • Move to about half your capacity — enough to feel awake, not drained.

Vāta: Slow, grounding, warming movement; avoid over-exertion.

Pitta: Keep it non-competitive and cooling; don't push to win.

Kapha: More vigorous, energising movement helps lift Kapha.

Ease off anything that hurts. Check with a doctor if pregnant or managing an injury or heart condition.

  7. Midday

    Make lunch the main meal

Digestion is traditionally strongest at midday, when the sun is highest — a natural time for your largest, most relaxed meal.

    How to

    • Eat at roughly regular times each day.
    • Sit, eat without screens, and chew well.
    • Favour warm, freshly cooked food; keep dinner lighter and earlier.

These are general lifestyle ideas, not a clinical diet. For any specific dietary need or health condition, consult a qualified practitioner and your doctor.

  8. Evening

    Wind down & sleep

A calm evening and a consistent bedtime are among the most powerful habits for steady energy and mood.

    How to

    • Dim screens and lights an hour before bed.
    • Try a calming breath practice or a warm drink.
    • Aim for a regular sleep time.

Vāta: A warm, quiet, predictable wind-down helps Vata settle.

Pitta: Let go of work and 'winning the day' before bed.

Kapha: An earlier night and lighter dinner support clear mornings.
