राजयोग · Rāja yoga
Effort: Gentle
Educational and traditional language about the body is not a diagnosis, a treatment plan, or a reason to skip a doctor. Stop on sharp pain, dizziness, numbness, or panic.
Raja yoga is the map most people mean when they quote the Yoga Sūtras. Patanjali does not sell a workout. He describes a training of attention: yama and niyama (how you live), āsana (a steady seat), prāṇāyāma (breath), pratyāhāra (drawing the senses in), then dhāraṇā, dhyāna and samādhi.
In a studio the word “yoga” often stops at āsana. Raja yoga treats the pose as furniture for sitting still. The work is what happens when the body is no longer the main event — when the mind can rest on one point without force.
This is not a race through the eight limbs. Most householders spend years on the first four. That is not failure; it is the design.
How to practise from here
- Begin with a simple ethical check (honesty, non-harming, a regular time) rather than a complicated pose.
- Sit in a shape you can hold without fidgeting. Use the in-app meditation timer. Add a short breath practice from the breathing library if the mind is loud.
- Read a few Yoga Sūtras from the scripture library. Do not skip sleep to “go deeper”.
What it does in the body
Raja yoga’s first body-effect is quiet: a stable seat, slower breathing, and a nervous system that is no longer performing. Later limbs are mental — they still change the body, because attention and muscle tone are not separate.
- Nervous system
- Still sitting and longer exhales tend to shift the body toward rest-and-digest. People often notice less jaw clenching and a slower pulse after a sit — not as a medical outcome, as a common felt sense.
- Spine and hips
- A sustainable seat (chair, wall, or cushion) trains the spine to stack without gripping. Pain is a signal to change the furniture, not to conquer it.
- Breath and diaphragm
- When posture is easy, the diaphragm can move. Shallow chest breathing often softens without any fancy pranayama.
- Sleep and recovery
- A short evening sit can make falling asleep easier for some people. It is not a treatment for insomnia; if sleep is broken, see a clinician.
- What it is not
- Raja yoga does not promise to “open the third eye”, diagnose anxiety, or replace therapy. Absorption (samādhi) is described, not scheduled.
Go gently
- Do not lock the knees or force lotus. A chair is valid āsana.
- Long breath holds and extreme fasting are not part of a beginner raja practice here.
- If sitting brings up panic or trauma, stop and seek a trauma-informed teacher or therapist — this page cannot hold that work.
Practise with a teacher
YouTube stays behind the same consent gate as the rest of Divine Dhun. These are public classes from teachers we already use on the practice side, not a medical prescription.
Keep these
- Raja yoga is eight limbs, not a flow class.
- The body is trained so the mind can sit.
- Start with ethics, seat, breath; the rest is not a weekend project.
