Pranayama

The yoga of breath: lengthening, shaping and occasionally retaining the inhale and exhale so the body-mind has a slower metronome.

All forms

प्राणायाम · Prāṇāyāma

Effort: Moderate

Educational and traditional language about the body is not a diagnosis, a treatment plan, or a reason to skip a doctor. Stop on sharp pain, dizziness, numbness, or panic.

Prāṇāyāma sits in Patanjali’s eight limbs and in every hatha manual. At its kindest it is simply making the breath longer and smoother. At its sharpest it includes holds, alternate nostrils, bellows and locks.

This site already hosts a library of gentle techniques (physiological sigh, box, 4-7-8, nadi shodhana-style patterns) as in-app tools with timers. That is the safe doorway. Advanced kumbhaka and kapalabhati belong with a teacher who can see your face.

Breath is the fastest lever on the nervous system you have while sitting still. Treat it with the respect you would give a sharp tool.

How to practise from here

  • Open the in-app breathing library. Pick one technique. Sit or lie so the belly can move.
  • Never practise breath holds in water, while driving, or to the point of dizziness.
  • A few minutes daily beats a heroic session. Stop on the first wave of strain.

What it does in the body

Altering breath alters blood gases, heart-rate variability, and the tone of the diaphragm and pelvic floor. Slow exhales generally soothe; fast pumping generally arouses. Matching the tool to the hour of day is the whole art.

Diaphragm and ribs
Slow nasal breathing trains the diaphragm to descend. The lower ribs widen. Mouth-breathing emergency patterns often soften. Stuffiness that does not clear is a reason to see a clinician, not to force nadi shodhana.
Heart and blood pressure
Longer exhales tend to slow the pulse. Fast kapalabhati tends to raise it. People with uncontrolled blood pressure, glaucoma, or hernia should not pump or hold without medical advice.
Brain and CO₂
Over-breathing (too fast, too much volume) causes tingling, visual snow, panic. That is chemistry. Sit, breathe quietly, wait. Do not interpret it as kundalini.
Pelvic floor and core
The diaphragm and pelvic floor move as a pair. Strain on the inhale or bearing down on the exhale can aggravate prolapse or hernia. Soft belly, easy effort.
What it is not
Pranayama is not a cure for asthma, anxiety disorder, or high blood pressure. It can sit beside medical care; it cannot replace it.

Go gently

  • No breath retention if you are pregnant, have glaucoma, are at risk of aneurysm, or feel panic rising.
  • Kapalabhati and bhastrika are not beginner home experiments.
  • Stop at dizziness, chest pain, or numbness — those are exits, not signs of progress.

Practise with a teacher

YouTube stays behind the same consent gate as the rest of Divine Dhun. These are public classes from teachers we already use on the practice side, not a medical prescription.

Keep these

  • Gentle lengthening is real pranayama.
  • The in-app library is the safe start.
  • Dizziness is chemistry, not awakening.
