Ahara — Food as Lifestyle
Culinary, not prescription: how to eat well by Ayurvedic tradition.
Eating principles
Eat mindfully
Sit down, put screens away, and give the meal your attention. Eating calmly and chewing well helps you notice when you're satisfied — and food simply tastes better.
Support your digestive fire (agni)
Favour warm, freshly cooked food, leave a little space in your stomach rather than overfilling, and let one meal digest before the next. Sip warm water rather than icy drinks with meals.
Make midday the main meal
Digestion is traditionally strongest when the sun is highest. A relaxed, larger lunch and a lighter, earlier dinner often sit more comfortably than the reverse.
Include the six tastes
Aiming for a little sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent in your meals naturally rounds them out, curbs cravings, and helps you feel satisfied.
Keep combinations simple
Ayurveda suggests some pairings sit lighter than others — for example, it traditionally avoids combining milk with sour fruit or fish. You don't need strict rules; simply notice what feels easy to digest for you.
Favour fresh and seasonal
Freshly prepared, seasonal, local food is prized over leftovers and heavily processed fare. Let the season guide you — lighter and cooler in summer, warmer and heartier in winter.
The six tastes
Sweetमधुर · Madhura
For example: Grains, milk, ripe fruit, root vegetables
Grounding and nourishing; in excess can feel heavy.
Sourअम्ल · Amla
For example: Lemon, yogurt, fermented foods, tamarind
Warming and appetising; a little goes a long way.
Saltyलवण · Lavaṇa
For example: Sea salt, seaweed, naturally salty foods
Moistening and grounding; best in moderation.
Pungentकटु · Kaṭu
For example: Ginger, chilli, black pepper, garlic
Warming and enlivening; lightens heaviness.
Bitterतिक्त · Tikta
For example: Leafy greens, turmeric, fenugreek
Cooling and lightening; refreshing in small amounts.
Astringentकषाय · Kaṣāya
For example: Legumes, pomegranate, green apple, tea
Drying and toning; the 'puckering' taste of lentils and unripe fruit.
