क्रियायोग · Kriyā yoga
Effort: Moderate
Educational and traditional language about the body is not a diagnosis, a treatment plan, or a reason to skip a doctor. Stop on sharp pain, dizziness, numbness, or panic.
In the Yoga Sūtras, kriyā yoga is not a secret breathing franchise. It is heat/effort (tapas), self-study (svādhyāya), and offering to īśvara. That triad is available to anyone: a regular practice, honest looking, and letting the result not be yours alone.
Later lineages (including well-known modern missions) use “Kriya Yoga” for specific spinal breathing methods taught after initiation. Those techniques are copyrighted, initiation-gated, and easy to distort on the internet. We name that fact; we do not publish the methods.
If you meet a school that promises kriya will fix karma on a timetable, walk away. The sūtra version is slower and less glamorous on purpose.
How to practise from here
- Tapas: show up for a modest daily seat or hatha session you can keep.
- Svādhyāya: read a few sūtras or a Gita verse, then sit without adding a TED talk in your head.
- Īśvara-praṇidhāna: end with one offering — the work was never only yours.
What it does in the body
Sūtra-kriyā works through regularity more than intensity. The body learns a rhythm: same hour, same seat, a little heat, then rest. Modern kriya breathing, by contrast, can be a cardiovascular event — which is why it stays off this page.
- Habit and circadian body
- Practising at a stable hour trains sleep-wake chemistry more reliably than occasional heroic sessions. The body likes clocks more than drama.
- Heat (tapas)
- A little muscular and breathing effort raises temperature and alertness. More is not more; leftover irritability after practice means you overcooked.
- Spine
- Self-study while slumped trains a slumped mind. Sit so the spine can be long without a military brace.
- What it is not
- Not a downloadable spinal-breath secret, not a karma-washing machine, not a replacement for the eight limbs.
Go gently
- Do not follow anonymous “kriya techniques” on video.
- Initiated students should follow their teacher, not mix methods from this site.
Practise with a teacher
YouTube stays behind the same consent gate as the rest of Divine Dhun. These are public classes from teachers we already use on the practice side, not a medical prescription.
Keep these
- Patanjali’s kriyā is effort, study, offering.
- Modern kriya schools are a different, often gated, method.
- Regularity beats intensity.
