Effort: Gentle
Educational and traditional language about the body is not a diagnosis, a treatment plan, or a reason to skip a doctor. Stop on sharp pain, dizziness, numbness, or panic.
Restorative yoga, associated especially with Judith Hanson Lasater’s teaching from Iyengar roots, uses bolsters, blankets and chairs so you do not have to hold yourself up. If you are still gripping, you need more prop, not more will.
It looks like doing nothing. The skill is allowing the floor to take the bones. For people who only know yoga as a workout, that skill is surprisingly hard.
Ten minutes in a supported fold can change more in a fried nervous system than an hour of ambitious flow. That is not laziness. That is matching the medicine to the state.
How to practise from here
- Gather pillows and a blanket. Lie with legs on a chair, or on your side in a stacked, supported curl.
- Stay 5–15 minutes. If you fall asleep, that counts.
- Practise when you are depleted, ill-recovering, or overtrained — not as a skip-the-work excuse every day if you actually want strength, but as a legitimate session.
What it does in the body
When muscles clock off, blood pressure and muscle-guarding often fall. Joints that were braced can receive synovial movement without load. The digestive tract, which shuts down under threat, may rumble — a good sign, not embarrassment.
- Nervous system
- Supported rest is one of the most reliable ways to invite parasympathetic tone: slower heart, warmer hands, unfocused eyes. If you cannot settle after 20 minutes, you may need a walk or a talk, not a deeper pose.
- Muscular guarding
- Chronic neck and low-back tightness is often the body standing sentry. When the sentry is allowed to sit, those muscles may shake or feel heavy as they let go.
- Breath
- With the ribs unrestricted by effort, the exhale lengthens on its own. Do not perform ocean breath on top unless it is easy.
- Immune and recovery
- Sleep and rest are when tissue repair is scheduled. Restorative is a dress rehearsal. It does not replace medical rest after surgery or illness — it can accompany recovery when a clinician agrees.
- What it is not
- Not yin, not a flexibility hack, not “giving up”. If you feel guilty, that is the workout culture talking, not anatomy.
Go gently
- Pregnancy: lying flat on the back for long periods can be uncomfortable later on; side-lying is a gift.
- Depression that turns into immobility: restorative can help or it can become hiding. A teacher or therapist helps you tell the difference.
- Numbness in supported inversions (legs up) — bend the knees or come down.
Practise with a teacher
YouTube stays behind the same consent gate as the rest of Divine Dhun. These are public classes from teachers we already use on the practice side, not a medical prescription.
Keep these
- Restorative is rest with geometry.
- More prop, less grip.
- Sleeping in the pose still counts.
