Yin yoga

Long, unmuscular floor holds that load fascia and joints slowly — a complement to yang (moving, muscular) practice, not a nap with branding.

Effort: Gentle

Educational and traditional language about the body is not a diagnosis, a treatment plan, or a reason to skip a doctor. Stop on sharp pain, dizziness, numbness, or panic.

Yin, as popularised by Paulie Zink, Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers, keeps the big muscles quiet so connective tissue around the hips, pelvis and spine can take a gentle, timed load. Holds last minutes, not breaths. Props support; they do not rescue you from sensation.

It borrows Chinese yin-yang language and some meridian maps. You do not have to accept those maps as anatomy for the practice to be useful as slow loading.

Yin is not restorative yoga. Restorative uses props so you can drop effort. Yin asks you to stay in a mild edge. Mixing the two is how people fall asleep in a shape they should still be attending to — or grind through a shape that needed pillows.

How to practise from here

  • Warm the room, not the muscles with a flow. Come to the floor. Set a timer. 3–5 minutes is plenty at first.
  • Back off if the sensation is sharp, electric, or in the joint line. Dull, wide stretch in the flesh is the usual target.
  • Come out slower than you went in. The tissue has been viscoelastic; it needs a moment.

What it does in the body

Connective tissue responds to slow, low-load, long-duration stress by becoming more tolerant of that range — within reason. The nervous system, meanwhile, is asked to stay with mild discomfort without panic. That double lesson is the “body effect”: hips that fold a little more, and a mind that does not treat every sensation as an emergency.

Fascia and joint capsules
Minutes of unloaded-muscle stretch change the felt sliding of tissue around hips and sacrum. Gains are modest and reversible if you only practise once. Pain in the joint itself means you found cartilage or ligament, not fascia — exit.
Hips, adductors, hamstrings
Frog, dragon, caterpillar and their cousins spend time in ranges vinyasa only visits. Next-day tenderness in the muscle belly can be normal; stabbing in the groin or knee is not.
Spine and discs
Long flexed or twisted shapes load discs in a way that feels delicious until it does not. Keep a long front body in forward folds if you have disc history, or skip flexion yin entirely.
Parasympathetic tone
If the edge is mild, heart rate falls and saliva returns. If you are white-knuckling, you are in a stress pose with a yin label.
What it is not
Yin will not “wring toxins from fascia” or replace physiotherapy. It is a slow load plus attention.

Go gently

  • Hypermobile people should use more props and less range — your end range is already easy and easier to injure.
  • Recent joint injury, sacroiliac flare, or osteoporosis: get clearance and a teacher, do not copy a 20-minute floor sequence.
  • Never round aggressively into pain to “get the meridian”.

Practise with a teacher

YouTube stays behind the same consent gate as the rest of Divine Dhun. These are public classes from teachers we already use on the practice side, not a medical prescription.

Keep these

  • Yin is long floor holds with muscles quiet, not a nap.
  • Sensation in flesh, not in the joint.
  • Exit slower than you entered.
